Jesus answered, “Amen, amen, I say to you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of flesh is flesh and what is born of spirit is spirit.” [John 3:5-6]

The Sacrament of Baptism

Baptism is, in the words of the Roman Ritual, ‘the gateway to the Christian religion and to eternal life.’ It is administered by a priest or deacon by the pouring of water and the invocation of the Holy Trinity. It effects in the soul of the baptized the remission of original and actual sin, the gift of justification, and incorporation into the Church.

Baptism at St. Rosalie’s Parish

Infants:

Baptisms for infants and children under 7 years old are held in the church on two Sundays per month at 2:00 pm in English, and the second Saturday of the month at 3:00 pm in Spanish. To schedule a baptism, please call the parish office at (631) 728-9461. The following things are necessary:

  1. A copy of the child’s birth certificate.
  2. A sponsor letter for the child’s godparent(s).
  3. Proof of adoption, if appropriate.

N.B. – We do not require a baptismal certificate from either godparent.

Selecting Godparents:

As models of Faith in the life of the baptized, the following criteria are helpful to keep in mind when selecting godparents.

  1. The child’s parents cannot act as godparents.
  2. There can be only one male godfather, and/or one female godmother.
  3. Both godparents must be fully initiated Catholics (Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion).
  4. Both godparents should be at least 16 years old.
  5. They should be regularly attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days.
  6. They cannot be bound by any canonical penalty (e.g. married outside the Church without a dispensation, cohabiting before marriage, worshiping at another denomination).

Ages 7 and older:

Inquiries regarding baptism for children 7 and older, teens, and adults should be directed to religious formation and RCIA.
